Hypermobility is often misunderstood as simply being flexible or “double-jointed.” In reality, it can reflect a deeper problem with connective tissue support.
Ligaments and joint capsules are meant to help hold the skeleton securely together. When these structures are too lax, the body has to find other ways to create stability. Over time, that can affect muscles, nerves, blood flow, and the autonomic nervous system.
Why Muscles Start Guarding
When ligaments do not provide enough support, muscles often step in to protect the joints. Instead of simply helping the body move, they begin working overtime to stabilize the skeleton.
This can lead to chronic muscle guarding, spasms, fatigue, trigger points, and tendon pain. What feels like a muscle problem may be the body’s attempt to protect joints that are moving too much.
How Nerves Become Irritated
Loose joints can stretch, tug, or irritate nearby nerves. Tight guarding muscles can also crowd nerves as they pass through the pelvis, neck, shoulders, or limbs.
In the pelvis, hip or sacroiliac joint instability may cause the piriformis or obturator internus muscles to tighten, contributing to sciatic or pudendal nerve irritation. In the upper body, shoulder and neck instability may contribute to thoracic outlet-type symptoms, including numbness, tingling, heaviness, or weakness in the arms.
The Autonomic Nervous System Connection
Hypermobility can also overlap with dysautonomia and POTS. Some patients experience heart rate spikes, dizziness, temperature sensitivity, sweating changes, poor sleep, digestive changes, and a feeling of internal alarm.
In certain patients, instability in the upper cervical spine or broader connective tissue laxity may contribute to nervous system irritation, altered blood flow, or pressure-related symptoms such as headaches, brain fog, or tinnitus.
Blood Flow, Digestion, and Immune Reactivity
Connective tissue also supports blood vessels and internal organs. When that support is lax, some patients may experience blood pooling, pelvic congestion-type symptoms, reflux, constipation, gastroparesis-like symptoms, or abdominal pain patterns.
Hypermobility may also overlap with mast cell activation symptoms or autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. This can add flushing, hives, food sensitivity, widespread burning pain, inflammation, and flare patterns to an already complex picture.
