About Dr. Deborah Barbiere

Clinical Background

Dr. Barbiere has worked in clinical practice for more than 25 years across schools, hospitals, and outpatient settings. She holds a Doctorate in Psychology and a Master’s in Traditional Oriental Medicine, with Diplomate credentials in Acupuncture, Oriental Medicine, Chinese Herbology, and Biomedicine.

Mind-Body Approach

Dr. Barbiere’s work focuses on the connection between chronic pain, emotional stress, nervous system regulation, and the body’s sense of safety. She helps patients understand how pain can keep the nervous system in a prolonged fight-or-flight state and how psychological and somatic tools can help restore communication between the mind and body.

Clinical Focus

Dr. Barbiere works with individuals, couples, families, and groups using psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, acceptance-based, and mind-body focused techniques. Her care may include CBT, ACT, biofeedback, EMDR, somatic processing, progressive muscle relaxation, sleep training, activity pacing, symptom tracking, and nervous system regulation strategies.

Eastern Medicine Integration

As a licensed acupuncturist, Dr. Barbiere may also integrate acupuncture and related modalities into care when appropriate. Her Eastern medicine background includes acupuncture, electrostimulation, moxibustion, infrared heat therapy, cupping, Gua Sha, acupressure, Tui Na, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and lifestyle or dietary counseling.

Role at MPM

At Manhattan Pain Medicine, Dr. Barbiere is an important part of the collaborative care team for patients with complex chronic pain, hypermobility, medical trauma, autonomic dysregulation, and long-standing pain conditions. She also provides psychological evaluations for neuromodulation trials, including spinal cord stimulation and dorsal root ganglion stimulation when required.

Pain Psychology as Part of the Care Plan

Dr. Barbiere helps patients process the emotional weight of chronic pain, regulate the nervous system, and rebuild a stronger sense of control throughout the medical journey.

Support, Education, and Nervous System Regulation

Dr. Barbiere helps patients move from feeling overwhelmed by pain toward greater body awareness, emotional regulation, and active participation in care. She also leads Manhattan Pain Medicine’s chronic pain support group and facilitates Empowered Relief, a pain education program designed to give patients practical tools for understanding and managing pain.

“Together, we work to understand and retrain the nervous system’s response to pain so patients can achieve better outcomes and ultimately reclaim their lives.”

Dr. Barbiere supports the psychological and mind-body dimensions of complex pain care.

I have very unique & severe nerve pain from CRPS which has no known specific cure. Dr. Siefferman has a huge tool box, far greater than the other 23 Drs. I have seen. He saved me from jumping off a bridge and continues to help me with both treatments and advice. Dr. S. is in a different league!
