Plantar fasciitis often causes heel pain with first steps in the morning or after sitting. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is more likely to cause burning, tingling, numbness, or electric pain. However, symptoms can overlap, and some patients may have both conditions or another contributor entirely.

When the evaluation suggests a specific nerve, tendon, joint, or inflammatory target, ultrasound-guided injections may be considered. Tarsal tunnel-like symptoms can overlap with peripheral neuropathy, lumbar radiculopathy, plantar fasciitis, Morton’s neuroma, metatarsalgia, tendon injury, ligament injury, arthritis, gout, vascular disease, infection, diabetic complications, and complex regional pain syndrome.
